After school – Mushrooms Discovery and Draw for Kids

Mushrooms Discovery and Draw for Kids Amstrong Woods
Wed, February 19, 2025, 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Lorri Pimentel and Holly Mead love teaching kids and creating art, and have designed a mushroom discovery walk and drawing class for children ages 8-12.

Stewards Docent Lorri Pimentel will lead a mushroom finding scavenger hunt through the redwoods, identifying the kinds of mushrooms we find, their major characteristics (changing shapes, color,  presence of a ring on the stem, observed gilled or spongy surface under the cap, presence and color of spores, and their likely location (such as a conk on a fir stump or a chanterelle under an oak tree). Students or their adult helper can use their cell phone to photograph the mushrooms they find.

After the walk through the redwood grove, students will bring the photographs on their phones back to the warm volunteer center. Professional artist, Holly Mead, will teach students to draw and color their favorite mushrooms from their photographed models, using water soluble colored pencils, then carefully “painting” over them with wet brushes on cold pressed watercolor paper.  All supplies are furnished except for cell phones. We will have photographs available to draw from as well.

Children will learn about the treasure of Armstrong Redwoods in a hands-on experiential way, and each child will have something fun to show at the end of the class.

Ideally, the parent/guardian will help the child photograph what they want to draw after everyone comes back from the walk and gathers in the Volunteer Building. During this time, paper, pencils, crayons, and paints will be provided for the children to recreate what they’ve seen on the walk, in a beautiful, educational and artistic way!
